Judith Krantz

American romance writer, Judith Krantz grew up in New York City. She graduated from high school at the age of 16 and proceeded to enroll in Wellesley College. In an interview with the Boston Globe in 1982, she reported that she had three goals while attending Wellesley: to date, read all the novels in their library, and to graduate. Though she took the record in the dating circle by having 13 dates with 13 different men, her grades did not hold the same record. She had an opportunity to improve during her sophomore year when she took a short story course, but even though the professor liked her writing, she only managed a "B" because of her horrible spelling. He felt the "B" would send her a message, but her refusal to write fiction again for 31 years was not likely the one he intended. After graduating from college, she moved to Paris and took a job in fashion public relations before returning to New York the next year. Upon her return to New York City, Krantz established a career in magazine journalism. She started out in the fiction department of Good Housekeeping Magazine before she was promoted to fashion editor and the good fortune to write several articles for the magazine. After she gave birth to her first child in 1957, she gave up her full-time job and chose to stay home and write part-time. Her career in freelance included a number of freelance articles for McCleans, McCalls, Ladies' Home Journal, and Cosmopolitan. Writing for the magazines allowed her to interview many women about the way they lived, thus providing the understanding she needed for her later career. When her husband decided to take flying lessons in 1976, Krantz decided to join him in spite of her fear of flying. Once she aborted that fear, she focused on her other fears beginning with writing fiction. Her husband had been telling her that she was a natural storyteller, but her resumption of fiction writing was more to prove to him that she was a lousy fiction writer than a desire to actually attempt to write a fiction novel. In spite of what she believed about her ability to write fiction, her first novel, Scruples, made number one spot on the New York Times Bestseller List. It was not copyrighted under her name, however, but under Steve Krantz Productions. She netted a whopping million for her second novel before it was even published. Today over 80 million copies of her novels are available in over 50 languages. She has sold rights for six of those to producers for a mini-series while her husband served as executive producer for some. After overcoming her fear of writing fiction, Krantz has managed to write several books, a memoir, and a television series. • Scruples • Princess Daisy • Mistral's Daughter • I'll Take Manhattan • Till We Meet Again • Dazzle • Scruples Two • Lovers • Spring Collection • The Jewels of Tessa Kent • Sex and Shopping: The Confessions of a Nice Jewish girl • Judith Krantz Secrets .
